Cut Crease

What is a cut crease? Find out how the popular eyeshadow technique works, who it suits and how to do the look yourself.

Cut Crease – The popular eyeshadow technique simply explained

The cut crease is one of the best-known techniques in professional eye make-up. The strong light-dark contrast makes the eye look bigger, more defined and especially expressive. Whether a glamorous evening look or a creative party make-up – the cut crease is versatile and can be adapted individually.

What is a cut crease?

A cut crease is a make-up technique in which the eyelid crease is clearly emphasised. A dark eyeshadow is applied above the natural crease and carefully blended. The mobile lid is then marked off with a lighter eyeshadow or concealer.

This creates the typical contrast that gives the look its name: the crease is visually “cut”, or clearly separated.

How do you do a cut crease?

For a classic cut crease look, the following steps are carried out:

  1. Apply an eyeshadow base.
  2. Define the crease with a dark eyeshadow.
  3. Gently blend the colour upwards.
  4. Mark off the mobile lid with concealer or a light base.
  5. Apply a light or shimmering eyeshadow.

trend. With its high-contrast appearance and dramatic yet elegant effect, this eye styling is literally an eye-catcher.

For the cut crease look, an eyeshadow primer is first applied to the eyelid; this ensures that eyeshadow and eyeliner do not smudge. The crease area is then traced with black or dark brown eyeshadow. The colour is then gently blended upwards, creating a beautiful gradient that forms a sharp contrast on the side of the crease. To intensify the light-dark difference even further, light eyeshadow or highlighter is applied to the mobile lid, as well as to the brow bone.

With its dramatic contrast, the cut crease styling is well suited to parties and evening events and can be personalised with colour if you like.

The look is characterised by the following:

  • Gradient with a sharp edge on the mobile lid
  • High contrast
  • Dramatic styling
