Shaving after laser hair removal: what is allowed?

When can you shave after laser hair removal? Find out what is allowed before and after laser treatment and what you should bear in mind.

Shaving after laser hair removal

You have just had a laser treatment and are wondering: When can I shave again after laser hair removal? Or you want to know whether you can shave at all between laser sessions?

The basic rule is: shaving is possible between treatments. Immediately after laser hair removal, however, you should first give your skin some rest and only shave again once it has calmed down.

We explain what you should bear in mind when shaving before and after laser hair removal and which hair removal methods you should avoid between your appointments.

Can you shave after laser hair removal?

Yes. Between the individual sessions of laser hair removal you can generally shave.

Unlike waxing, epilating or plucking, shaving only removes the hair above the skin. The hair root remains – and that is exactly where the laser should work at the next treatment.

Immediately after the treatment, however, the skin may be sensitive or slightly red. That is why you should not run a razor over freshly treated skin straight away.

When can you shave again after laser treatment?

Wait to shave until your skin has completely calmed down after the laser treatment.

How quickly that happens can vary from person to person. If the skin is still red, warm or sensitive, give it a little more time.

The important thing is not to shave again as quickly as possible but to keep an eye on the condition of your skin.

If you are unsure when you can shave again after your individual treatment, ask your beauty therapist.

Why shouldn't you shave straight after laser treatment?

A laser treatment puts strain on the treated skin. Immediately afterwards, it can react more sensitively than usual.

A razor causes additional mechanical friction. On skin that is already irritated, this can be unpleasant and lead to further irritation.

So after the treatment, the rule is:

Let the skin calm down first – then shave again.

Can you shave between laser treatments?

Yes. Shaving is the preferred method if you want to remove unwanted hairs between your laser appointments.

So you don't have to walk around with visible hair for the entire treatment period.

What you should avoid, on the other hand, are methods that remove the hair together with the root.

These include in particular:

  • waxing
  • epilating
  • plucking with tweezers
  • sugaring

The reason: for effective laser treatment, the hair root or hair follicle should be present as the target structure.

Should you shave before laser hair removal?

Before a laser hair removal appointment, the area of the body concerned is usually shaved.

This means there are no long hairs on the surface of the skin, while the hair structure relevant to the treatment remains below the skin.

We will explain exactly when you should shave before your appointment during your individual consultation.

Why can't you wax or epilate before laser treatment?

Laser hair removal and waxing or epilating work in fundamentally different ways.

Waxing or epilating pulls the hair out of the skin. Shaving, on the other hand, only shortens the visible part of the hair.

For the laser treatment, we need the pigment in the hair as the target for the light energy. That is why you should avoid methods that remove the hair from the root before and between your laser treatments.

What should you bear in mind after laser hair removal?

Besides shaving, there are a few other points to bear in mind after a treatment.

The treated skin should be irritated as little as possible at first.

Depending on the treated area and your individual skin reaction, we recommend, among other things:

  • avoid strong friction
  • treat the skin gently
  • avoid direct intense sunlight
  • use suitable sun protection
  • avoid heavy sweating immediately after the treatment
  • do not use harsh peels on the treated skin

After your treatment, we will give you individual care advice for your skin type and the treated area of the body.

How many sessions do you need for laser hair removal?

A single treatment is usually not enough.

The reason lies in the natural growth cycle of our hair. Not every hair is in the same growth phase at the time of treatment.

That is why several treatments at suitable intervals are necessary.

How many sessions you actually need depends on factors such as the treated area of the body, your skin and hair type and your individual hair growth.

How long does laser hair removal last?

The aim of professional laser hair removal is a long-term reduction of hair growth.

However, this does not mean that every single hair is guaranteed to disappear forever for everyone. The result can be influenced by individual and hormonal factors, among others.

That is why at the most beautiful we draw up an individual treatment plan and monitor how your hair growth develops during your appointments.

Who is laser hair removal suitable for?

Whether laser hair removal is suitable for you depends on factors such as your skin type, your hair colour and the area of the body to be treated.

A professional assessment before the treatment begins is therefore particularly important.

At the most beautiful in Salzburg, we analyse your individual circumstances and discuss with you which results are realistic.
